Answer:
My guess is your talocrural joint is popping - called cavitation. Each joint capsule is sealed with fluid, and when it slightly loses its seal, there is a popping sound. Ligaments and other connective tissue can also make a popping sound. You might want to try strenghtening exercises to the ankle complex, like step aerobics, toe raises, and ankle rolling warm-up exercises. If it keeps happening or more pain arises, see a chiropractor or orthopedic specialist.

Answer:
it is bad because it sounds like your tendons are rolling over eachother or over your bone.. and it needs to be checked

Answer:
It's possible that you've fractured it at some point in time. Your bones could be rubbing together, causing the cracking sound. You also could have strained it. The tendons/ligaments could be irritated. Many number of things actually. If it doesn't go away, I'd personally consult with a doctor.

Answer:
My ankles crack a lot too, turns out I had a stress fracture. You might want to have it looked at. Could be nothing but if it is you'll want to take care of it before it gets worse.
