but after the 1st week as i only had a half cast put on my arm, and being the chronic fidgetter that i am, it became loose and served no purpose so i took it off, obviously the smart thing to have done would have been to have it replaced, but i didn't, so my question to you lot is will my hand be permanently damaged?,and is it too late to have it fixed up? because as it stands now it's borderline useless
Answer:
Scaphoid fractures can be treated conservatively in long or short arm casts or splints, but you have to be compliant with treatment. My advice would be to go and have your hand re-x rayed to see what the fracture looks like, be evalutated by a hand surgeon (either orthopedic or plastic surgeon), and get re-splinted.
If the fragments have mal-aligned or the fracture has healed in malunion or non-union, you’ll likely require surgery which would entail placement of a screw through the scaphoid with or without a bone graft in the area of fracture.
