I would say that I’ve an hourglass figure, only it's not so defined because I'm petite. I was wondering what exercises are ideal to define the smallest part of my waist? I'm not looking to lose weight whatsoever, I just want to tone it up a bit.

Thanks for your help! =]

Answer:
You've got muscles all the way around your abdomen, like a girdle. The ones in front are your rectus abdominus (the “six-pack” muscles), the ones on the sides are your obliques, and the one at the back, parallel to your spine, are your erector spinae. There are more muscles underneath these that you can't see directly, and these are referred to as your “core” muscles.

For a firm and supple waist, you'll want to tone up all of these muscles. Bicycle crunches will work your abs and obliques at the same time, which is very convenient. Weighted side bends are another good oblique exercise. There are a million variations on the crunch, and they typically all target the rectus abdominus well. Switch up your exercise routine periodically; otherwise your muscles will get used to the movements and stop responding.

For your back, some good exercises are supermans and bent-knee good mornings (you need weight for that one; if you don't have access to weights, try to find heavy objects around your house).

For your core, my favorite exercise if trying to do pushups with your hands on a pilates ball. It's near impossible to actually do a pushup, but it really kills your core in the meantime. You can also do a regular plank on a pilates ball. If you haven't got a ball, do planks and side planks on the floor. Pushups (not on your knees) will actually also strengthen your core, and are a great all-around exercise; if you can't do them on the floor yet, do them against a wall, then a stair, then a lower stair, and so on until you're strong enough to do them on the floor.

And finally, it wouldn't injured to do some squats and lunges just to keep your legs and butt in the game. Hindu squats are challenging but fun once you get the motion down, and they'll strengthen your lower half while improving your balance and overall fitness.

You should be able to Google any and all of these exercises with no problem. Oh, and like another poster stated, hula hooping really is good exercise! If you don't have anywhere to hula hoop, just make a hula-hooping motion for a few minutes; it'll stretch your muscles and loosen up your hips.
