Im 15 years old 6'1 and 196 pounds and it says I am overweight but im far from being fat.
So is BMI not very accurate because it doesnt measure muscle mass?
Answer:
Not very accurate if you're muscular. Get some calipers and measure your body composition/bodyfat %. That will tell you where you are more accurately.
My BMI says I'm overweight, but I'm only 7% bodyfat which is pretty lean and it wouldn't be healthy to lower bodyfat any more than that. Muscle doesn't make you overweight, fat does.
Answer:
no… it is very accurate.
Answer:
BMI is body mass index, as in fat.
And it is very accurate.
Answer:
Mine was never EXACTLY accurate until I went to a nurse in my gym for a more accurate reading using other measurements as well. Mine was on the far end of being healthy but I wear a size 2 at 5'4". I also have a low body fat percentage. Those things that you get offline aren't extremely accurate though they do offer an adequate reading.
Answer:
BMI is no where near accurate!!!! its more of a guideline i guess, if your just a medium build person with little averge muscle.
im 5'10 23 years old, and 175 lbs, and my BMI says im also overweight. and people i know that are just ripped with like 10% body fat and can bench press 400 pounds. it says they are on the heavy side of overweight, close to obese!! LOL
if you go to a dr. and have them do a more detailed and accurate reading that involves a body fat % reading, then yes they are very accurate!! if you just plug in your hieght and weight then no its not accurate!!
Answer:
Don't listen to these clowns that say BMI = fat. Think about football players, they have a lot of muscle, they show up as obese on those BMI charts. Find a waist measurement chart, or google the navy circumference method. These are better for determining fitness.
Answer:
Yes, your BMI is deffently not correct in most cases. I am a 16 year old vasity football player, Im 6'0 204 and Im mostly muscle and the Body Mass Index don't take in consideration that muscle weighs more than fat. If you have anymore questions, add me at jmh_football_freak@yahoo.com
Answer:
If you have a lot of muscle, weighing 196lbs and being 6'1" is just fine. Your BMI is 25.9 which is JUST BARELY over the "normal weight" range.
BMI is just one thing. Diet, exercise, level of activity, blood pressure, and body fat percentage can all be looked at.
Plus, you're only 15. You're still growing. 196 is fine.
Answer:
Mine says I am underweight! I am 5'11 and 128 lbs. I am built thin naturally… So my BMI makes me sound anorexic. I can even see areas where I need improvement (toning legs and stomach, etc.)
So mine isn't very accurate either.
Answer:
Let me tell you BMI is sooo not accurate. Im 15 and 149lb and 5'6". Muscle is not added into these things and BMI is supposedly a guideline but it needs improved to include muscle mass.
Answer:
It's a horrible for people who are actually athletic and have some muscle on them. I've been athletic since I was a child and am pretty skinny. My body fat percentage is considerably lower than what is considered "normal," but my BMI says I am obese.
I probably know how you feel, its pretty annoying that the BMI scale is pretty standard for measuring obesity when it really doesn't take any factors (besides weight and height) into consideration.
