Hi guys,
My Grandma has an issue where the iron amount in her blood is way too high. I read a few reports on how herbal medicines often contain dangerously high doses of metals. My Grandma is currently taking over a dozen herbal medicines. I'm beginning to fear that one of these medicines might be the reason for her high blood iron concentration.
Is there a place on the internet where I can look at trials done for different substitute medicines that show each drug's toxicity?
Also, how can I resolve this problem so that I have the ability to know once and for all whether or not my grandma's herbal medicine is the cause for her iron problem?
Thanks :D,
Ben
Answer:
Unfortunately no. The overwhelming majority of herbal products have never had -any- toxicology studies of any sort done on them, and the ones that have are only partially complete, and not indexed in any way.
What you might try doing is finding out what she's taking, going to NCBI PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/), and searching for that along with “Iron Overload” or just 'Iron'. Unfortunately, a lot of what you're going to find is going to be very technical information on biochemistry and cell biology, and might not be either useful or understandable.
Your ideal option is probably going to be her primary care physician - an actual MD, not whatever crazy naturopathic charletans she's seeing. I'm assuming she's seeing one to get these lab results that show the high blood. Talk to your grandmother, get her to talk to her doctor about what she's taking. If she refuses to, or refuses to even think about the possibility, find out what she's taking, and talk to her physician yourself.
It is entirely possible that something she is taking is causing this. It is also possible that it can be related to other things, such as infections, and liver disease. It is very important that these get proper treatment.
Ideal of luck to you.
