The first step is to eat fiber rich vegetables and fruits, and whole grains (oatmeal is a good one, but get rolled oats, not quick oats or packets), and drink PLENTY of water. Prune juice and apple juice are also good.

Avoid cheese and meat.

Probiotic capsules are a good idea, get some with guaranteed 2 billion or more organisms. Yogurt has these probiotics, but milk products are constipating for many people.

If this doesn't produce results in a day or two, you can try drinking psyllium husk blended with water. Even better is to mix this drink with hydrated bentonite clay. Follow the directions on the packages.

If all this fails, capsules or tincture of cascara sagrada (an herb) has always worked for me. Epsom salts blended as directed for laxative will work if all else fails, but be ready to hang around the loo for a while, and also they taste awful. Avoid other laxatives and senna herb.

It's really not weird, it's very common, but most people don't speak about it because they are humiliated. Don’t ignore it though, it can be perilous.

**The most common cause of constipation is insufficient dietary fiber, but many other things can contribute too. Some medications, antidepressants, painkillers, and iron supplements, for example.

If your stools are floaters, you have enough fiber, if they don't float, you need more fiber. (I suggest Konsyl and Fiber Choice tablets. Take only half doses at first until you know how it affects you.) If necessary do the following:

1. Omit white bread

2. Discover and eliminate food allergens

3. Supplement with a lactobacillus acidophilus formula

4. Take at least 60 mg of folic acid daily

5. Make sure your thyroid is functioning properly

6. Exercise daily, especially activities bending at the waist.

7 Drink plenty of water.

8. Take Vitamin C (To determine individual dosage on the first day take 1000mg hourly until diarrhea occurs, then reduce dosage to just below that for individual daily dosage. Vitamin C isn’t toxic in huge doses but must be taken throughout the day to benefit. Divide dosage to three or four times a day. (I advocate powder, buffered kind)**
