I'm on unemployment and have been for sometime now. I'd really like to finish school, but under the circumstances I cannot go back. When I was a full time student, I was covered under my parent's health insurance plan. Now that I'm not, the company will drop me come September. It's so expensive and I can't afford it. I was wondering if unemployment provides health insurance. Can anyone give me some information on this? I'm in the state of New Jersey and I will definitely be needing it. How do I go about getting it? Will it cost anything? What type of insurance is it? Anything will help! Thank You So Much!

No it doesn't, however when you’re dropped from your parents plan, it will offer you a separate plan at group rates. This is called COBRA. Also if you’re on unemployment because you lost your job through no fault of your own, the federal government will pick up 65% of your COBRA premiums for 9 months. Make sure your parent who has the insurance tells their employer that you want to be covered under COBRA as they don’t have to offer it to you if they are unaware of your situation.
