Codeine is over the counter in several countries, and there's a few sites that’ll ship it to you with no prescription needed. I've used it occasionally in the past for my back and neck pain and it's very effective for mild to moderate pain.
In addition to codeine, there's also an herb which you might be interested in called kratom. It's effects are similar to that of hydrocodone or codeine, only it's a natural, legal herb and not a controlled substance. Kratom isn't very well known and your physician probably hasn't heard of it (yet), but I've personally had good experiences with it and know of many others who have as well. In addition to treating pain, it's also known to help ease withdrawal symptoms for people getting off of opiate based pain medication. The Kratom King is one trusted source for high quality kratom if you want to go that route.
Good luck finding an effective pain med and don't be afraid to speak to your doctor about your pain and see what he thinks.
